What this value means
22% is the optional flat concessional rate for domestic companies (no incentive deductions, exempt from MAT), elected by the large majority of the corporate tax base and treated as India's headline rate. Effective rate 25.168% = 22% + 10% surcharge + 4% Health & Education Cess. Default regime for non-electing companies: 30% (25% where turnover in the statutory reference year does not exceed INR 4 billion / Rs 400 crore) plus surcharge 7% (income > Rs 1 crore) or 12% (> Rs 10 crore) plus 4% cess; MAT 15% of book profit. New-manufacturing regime: 15% (+10% surcharge +4% cess = 17.16%) under s.115BAB (now s.201, ITA 2025) for companies incorporated on/after 2019-10-01 — commencement-of-production window closed 2024-03-31, so it is legacy-only for new entrants. Foreign companies: 35% + surcharge/cess. The Income-tax Act, 2025 (in force 2026-04-01, first 'tax year' 2026-27) re-numbered sections but changed no rates; Finance Act, 2026 continued all corporate rates unchanged.
