What this value means

Binds all government, semi-government, autonomous and semi-autonomous offices and statutory bodies. The notification has four relevant parts; this list is parts (KA) + (KHA) only. Part (KA) 'General holidays' = 14 days, part (KHA) 'Holidays by executive order' = 14 days, total 28 gazetted days, of which the gazette itself notes 11 fall on weekly holidays (7 in part KA, 4 in part KHA), leaving 17 working days off. Eid-ul-Fitr carries 5 gazetted days and Eid-ul-Adha 6; Durga Puja 2. NO SUBSTITUTION / MONDAYISATION EXISTS IN BANGLADESH: where a gazetted holiday falls on the weekly holiday (Friday or Saturday for most government offices) it is simply absorbed and no replacement weekday is granted - the gazette makes no provision for a substitute day, so no shifting has been applied here. Two calendar dates carry two distinct gazetted holidays each and have been merged into a single entry: 20 March 2026 (Jumatul Bida, part KA + an Eid-ul-Fitr executive-order day) and 1 May 2026 (May Day, part KA + Buddha Purnima, part KA). 28 gazetted days less those 2 merges = the 26 entries served. DELIBERATE EXCLUSIONS: parts (GA), (GHA), (UMA) and (CHA) of the same notification list OPTIONAL (aichchhik) holidays for Muslim (5 days), Hindu (9 days), Christian (8 days) and Buddhist (7 days) employees, taken at the individual employee's election against a personal cap of three days - these are NOT public holidays and are excluded; excluded items include Shab-e-Miraj (17 Jan), Saraswati Puja (23 Jan), Magi Purnima (1 Feb), Shivaratri (15 Feb), Ash Wednesday (18 Feb), Dolejatra (3 Mar), Harichand Thakur's birth anniversary (17 Mar), Good Thursday/Friday/Saturday and Easter Sunday (2-5 Apr), Buddha Purnima eve and day-after (30 Apr, 2 May), Ashari Purnima (29 Jul), Akheri Chahar Somba (12 Aug), Madhu Purnima (26 Sep), Fateha-i-Yazdaham (24 Sep), Mahalaya (10 Oct), Durga Puja Saptami/Ashtami (18-19 Oct), Lakshmi Puja (25 Oct), Prabarana Purnima (25 Oct), Shyama Puja (8 Nov) and the days either side of Christmas (24 and 26 Dec). Also NOT included: the eight national days abolished by the interim government in October 2024 (including 17 March, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's birthday / National Children's Day, and 15 August) - stale third-party calendars still carry these and are wrong. REGIONAL: 13 April 2026 (Chaitra Sangkranti) is a general holiday ONLY in the Rangamati, Khagrachhari and Bandarban hill districts - it is retained in the list because the gazette places it in part (KA), but it is not a nationwide day off; elsewhere in the country the same date is an optional Buddhist-calendar holiday. PROVISIONAL: nine entries are marked in the gazette with an asterisk meaning 'dependent on sighting of the moon' and may shift by one day - Shab-e-Barat (4 Feb), Shab-e-Qadr (17 Mar), all five Eid-ul-Fitr dates (19-23 Mar), Buddha Purnima (1 May), all six Eid-ul-Adha dates (26-31 May), Ashura (26 Jun) and Eid-e-Miladunnabi (26 Aug). Day-of-week assignments in the gazette were independently checked against the Gregorian calendar and are consistent (4 Feb Wed, 26 Mar Thu, 1 May Fri, 5 Aug Wed, 16 Dec Wed).
