17 general holidays in 2026 (the list above; EVERY SUNDAY is also a general holiday under Cap. 149 but Sundays are omitted from the array). TWO STATUTORY CATEGORIES — a genuine trap: (1) GENERAL HOLIDAYS under the General Holidays Ordinance (Cap. 149) are the 'public/bank holidays' — observed by banks, schools, government offices, courts and the public, and are what most people mean by 'Hong Kong public holidays'; there are 17 of them in 2026. (2) STATUTORY HOLIDAYS ('labour holidays') under the Employment Ordinance (Cap. 57 s 39) are the paid days every employee is legally entitled to; historically only 12, they are being raised by one day every two years to reach parity with the 17 general holidays (13 in 2022, 14 in 2024, 15 in 2026, 16 in 2028, 17 in 2030). So in 2026 an employee has 15 statutory holidays, while banks/schools observe all 17 general holidays; the gap is holidays such as the day following Good Friday, Easter-related days and Buddha's Birthday, which are general but not yet statutory. This series serves the 17 GENERAL holidays per the brief. Movable/lunar days for 2026: Lunar New Year 17-19 Feb; Ching Ming falls Sun 5 Apr (holiday substituted to Mon 6 Apr); Buddha's Birthday falls Sun 24 May (substituted to Mon 25 May); Tuen Ng 19 Jun; Mid-Autumn Festival is 25 Sep so the holiday is 'the day following' on 26 Sep; Chung Yeung falls Sun 18 Oct (substituted to Mon 19 Oct). SUBSTITUTION RULE: where a general holiday falls on a Sunday, the next non-holiday day is designated instead — this produced a small chain reaction in April 2026: 6 Apr is used as the Ching Ming substitute, so 'the day following Easter Monday' moves to Tue 7 Apr.
