What this value means

16 statutory holidays plus 2 generated days = 18 non-working public holidays in 2026, as listed by the Cabinet Office. Substitution rules applied: Art. 3(2) - a holiday falling on Sunday is replaced by the nearest following non-holiday weekday, so Constitution Memorial Day (Sun 2026-05-03) produces the substitute on Wed 2026-05-06 (May 4-5 are themselves holidays); Art. 3(3) - a weekday sandwiched between two holidays becomes a holiday, making Tue 2026-09-22 a 'kokumin no kyujitsu' between Respect for the Aged Day (Mon 09-21) and Autumnal Equinox Day (Wed 09-23). Equinox dates (Mar 20, Sep 23) are fixed by the official gazette calendar notice published in February of the preceding year; the Cabinet Office also publishes a machine-readable CSV (syukujitsu.csv) on the same page. Deliberate exclusions: Dec 31-Jan 3 New Year customary closures, Obon (mid-August) and Christmas are NOT statutory holidays; there are no prefectural statutory holidays. 2027 EXTENSION (2026-07-30): the 16 national holidays of the Act on National Holidays plus one substitute day. The nth-weekday 'Happy Monday' holidays are computed for 2027 (Coming of Age = 2nd Monday of January, 11 January; Marine Day = 3rd Monday of July, 19 July; Respect for the Aged = 3rd Monday of September, 20 September; Sports Day = 2nd Monday of October, 11 October). The two astronomical holidays are NOT estimated: the National Astronomical Observatory's reki-yoko for Reiwa 9 was published in the Kanpo (official gazette) on 2 February 2026, fixing the Vernal Equinox at 21 March and the Autumnal Equinox at 23 September 2027. The Art. 3(2) substitute-holiday rule fires once: the Vernal Equinox falls on Sunday 21 March, so Monday 22 March is a substitute holiday. The Art. 3(3) 'citizens' holiday' bridge rule does NOT fire in 2027 — the gap between Respect for the Aged Day (Monday 20 September) and the Autumnal Equinox (Thursday 23 September) is two days, not one — so unlike 2026 no bridge day is served.
