What this value means

Reference month June 2026; national CPI index 293.47 (2015-16=100); month-on-month -0.30% (the first monthly fall since December 2025, driven by a 7.22% drop in the Transport group as motor fuel prices unwound). Urban 11.17% YoY, rural 10.92% YoY. Core inflation (non-food non-energy) 8.7% urban / 7.9% rural; 20% trimmed mean 9.6% urban / 9.3% rural. SPI (lowest quintile) +12.82% YoY, WPI +10.69% YoY. FY2025-26 (July-June) average CPI inflation was 7.05%, against 4.49% in FY2024-25 — but the shape matters more than the average: inflation ran 5-7% through Q1-Q3 FY26 and then spiked from 7.30% in March to 10.89% in April and 11.66% in May on the Middle East energy shock (motor fuel +32% YoY, liquefied hydrocarbons +60.6% YoY, electricity +23.8% YoY) plus an unanticipated surge in wheat and wheat-flour prices (wheat +64.7% YoY urban). June's 11.07% is the first deceleration of that spike. Well above the SBP's 5-7% medium-term target range; the MPC expects inflation to stay in double digits 'for the next few months' before easing. CORRECTION TO THE BRIEF: the brief said inflation 'fell sharply through 2025 — verify current'. It did fall sharply (to 0.3% in April 2025), but that is stale — Pakistan is now in double-digit inflation. NOTE ON THE PBS PUBLICATION PATH: the monthly release PDF lives under an unintuitive WordPress upload path (/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Monthly-Review-<Month>-2026.pdf) regardless of the actual month; the human-readable landing page is https://www.pbs.gov.pk/monthly-inflation-report-for-june-2026/. Next release: July 2026 CPI, expected in the first days of August 2026.
